LANSING — At a special ceremony held in Lansing, Michigan State Police (MSP) Director Col. Kriste Kibbey Etue presented Tpr. Donna Haw of the St. Ignace Post with the MSP Lifesaving Award.
On Aug. 6, 2011, while off-duty, Haw was swimming with her family at a public beach when she heard a drowning boy yell for help. As Haw swam to help the drowning boy, she saw another boy sinking in his attempt to help his friend. Haw pulled both boys safely to shore, called emergency medical personnel and notified their family members.
In presenting Trooper Haw with the MSP Lifesaving Award, the department recognizes if not for her quick actions and training the boys may not have survived.
Haw enlisted with the department in 1994, graduating as a member of the 110th Trooper Recruit School. She has served at the St. Ignace Post since graduation.
