Our Journey Begins
Welcome to Upper Peninsula Magazine. It’s our hope to take you on a journey that will enlighten you on the treasures of our unique region. It’s my desire to show you why I love this peninsula.
The first discussion my wife and I had when we first met was about backpacking Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Over the years we’ve made many trips there as well as many other parts of the U.P. She is very patient with me as I stop to take photos of varied shorelines. The towering cliffs of Pictured Rocks, the stoney shores of the Keweenaw Peninsula (above photo), the white stones along Mackinac Island, the fossiled shore of Little Bay de Noc and the magnificent sunset at Black River Harbor in Gogebic County. We continue to crisscross the U.P. and never tire of its beauty and hospitality.
I first started traveling in the U.P. as part of my job as a reporter for WFRV-TV5 in Green Bay. The best part was meeting so many different types of people and visiting unique places. I want to be able to share some of those people and places with you as we go on this journey. The first person I chose was Jack Deo from Superior View in Marquette (Page 14). Being someone who loves photography and history, I admire Jack’s ability to recognize the value of old photographs. You will also meet Martha and Leonard Fieber of Manistique (Page 52). They naturally turned to creating art after returning to the U.P. and use nature as their inspiration.
And, we have visited a lot of places we’d like to take you. One of the places we always try to stop at in Houghton is the Ambassadors (Page 21). Good food, great drinks and entertaining gnomes. When looking for new places several years ago we discovered the Boardwalk Inn in St. Ignace. There’s something about the lobby that appeals to me.
Some old and some new friends are helping to take you on this journey. I worked for Charlie Eshbach while attending Michigan Tech. He wrote a story on the Estivant Pines in Copper Harbor (Page 57). Frida Warra was a cub reporter for that “other” TV station way back when. She took time to tell us about kayaking the Great Lakes (Page 46). And a new friend who seems like an old one, Alan Kamuda. I admired his photography at the Detroit Free Press and tried to be like him when I was working for Dave Rood at the Delta Reporter. He gives us a tour of the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum (Page 42). He was there when they pulled the bell of the Edmund Fitzgerald from the depths of Lake Superior. He can’t wait to tell you about people he meets in the U.P.
This is our first issue. We hope you will help us keep this journey going. Have fun reading the magazine and visit us on the web at www.upperpeninsula.biz. See you around the U.P.
